AFA in Action

Helping innovate our industry

The Alberta Federation of Agriculture is part of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA), the most effective and trusted farm advocacy group in Ottawa. With over 200,000 Canadian farmers and farm families as members, CFA enables AFA to make Alberta’s views count on a national level.

Business Risk Management

Farming and ranching can involve a lot of risk. We ask: why does the producer bear so much of the risk associated with producing food for Canadian consumers and export markets? We continue to advocate for Business Risk Management programming that will allow producers to deal with risk effectively.

Surface Rights

AFA has a proud history of involvement with surface rights legislation in Alberta. In fact, we were instrumental in the development of the Surface Rights Act as we know it today. We continue to acknowledge the serious challenges that orphaned and abandoned wells can present for farmers and the environment. We believe that land health should always be the top priority.

Research and Development

The future success of Alberta producers depends on growing more food, more profitably and with fewer resources. The question is: how should research into these questions be prioritized, performed and funded? With research structures changing, AFA continues to advocate for the needs of farmers and ranchers. AFA is a Class A voting member of Results Driven Agriculture Research.

Transportation

As an exporting country, Canada needs reliable and efficient transportation infrastructure to cost-effectively move product to export position. AFA continues to advocate for a full costing review to ensure that the MRE program is accurate and fair for all those involved. Currently, producer obligations with respect to railway crossings is another area we’re active in.

Environment

Environmental sustainability is increasingly part of the farmer’s job description. AFA provides effective representation on several environmental committees including the Alberta Environmental Farm Plan and the Agricultural Plastics Recycling Group (APRG). AFA continues to support markets that monetize greenhouse gas reductions and associated supply chain data.

Farm Safety

AFA supports mandatory WCB for farm operators, the inclusion of agriculture in employment standards and the application of OH&S to all agricultural operations.  To attract the kind of skilled labour our industry requires, our employees should be subject to the same employment standards as employees in other major industries.
